Nøtterøy

Nøtterøy is an island and municipality in the Norwegian Vestfold. It mainly consists of the main islands Nøtterøy and the islands Foynland with Husøy in the north- east near the mainland opposite Husvik ( municipality Tønsberg ) and Veierland (up to 1964 on the commune Stokke ) in the southwest towards Tevik on Nøtterøy east of the island Tjøme as well as about 175 other smaller and larger islands. The majority of the population lives in Teie on Nøtterøy.

The municipality was established as Nøtterøy formannskapsdistrikt (Chairman shaft District) Nøterø in 1837 and named 1866-1918 Nøtterø. A part of Nøtterøy (102 inhabitants) were transferred on 1 January 1877 the municipality Tønsberg. On 1 January 1901 Håøy was passed (north of Veierland ) with 70 residents from the municipality to the municipality Stokke Nøtterøy. On 1 July 1915, a part of the municipality Nøtterøy was issued (12 inhabitants) to the municipality Sem. Veierland came on 1 January 1964, 165 inhabitants to the commune Nøtterøy, and on 1 January 1980, the date last frontier settlement took place when an uninhabited part of the municipality Nøtterøy was submitted to the municipality Tønsberg.

The highest point is the Nøtterøys Vetan with 99 moh.

The name comes from the Old Norse Njótarøy (Island of Njót ), suggesting an original name Njót. The name development since 1200:
