Nucleus basalis of Meynert

The nucleus basalis ( Meynert, Ch4 ) is one of the major acetylcholine -producing nuclei of the central nervous system. It is located in the frontal, basal telencephalon approximately between amygdala and globus pallidus. Efferents sends the nucleus basalis in the limbic system and the entire cerebral cortex. The core was described by Theodor Meynert neuroanatomist for the first time.

Failures of the nucleus basalis be associated with Alzheimer 's disease and result from the absence of the transmitter acetylcholine in the telencephalon. For the treatment of Alzheimer's dementia use of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors to increase the concentration of acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft.
