Nuiqsut is a city in North Slope Borough in the state of Alaska in the United States.

Geography

Nuiqsut is located about 35 miles from the coast of the Beaufort Sea on the west bank of the Colville River Delta on Nechelik Channel. There is an arctic climate with little rainfall.

History

The area around Nuisqsut was settled by the tribe of the Inupiat Eskimo. The Colville River Delta has traditionally been a popular trading place for the Inupiat, the area offered good opportunity for fishing and hunting. The old Village of Nuiqsut ( Itqilippaa ) was abandoned in the later 1940s, because there was no school in the area. In 1973, the area was settled again by 27 families from Barrow. Built in 1973 and 1974 -governmental organizations a school, homes and other structures. Goods were brought tractors and snow machines from Barrow. 1975 Nuiqsut was incorporated as a city.

Economy and infrastructure

Nuiqsut is located amidst a vast oil-producing region. Oil production are operated by companies such as ConocoPhillips and BP. In return for the use of land to pay the oil companies dividends to the indigenous Inupiat Eskimos who are in legal possession of the land. For many residents of Nuiqsut make the dividend payments by the main or even sole source of income There are in Nuiqsut a school, a letter receiving office ( the Native of the Kuukpik Corporation and is not operated by the United States Postal Service ), a Presbyterian church, a hospital ( the Nuiqsut Clinic ) and a recreation center. Currently, a nursing home is being built. Local employment opportunities are mainly the management of the North Slope Borough, the city, school, hospital and Kuukpik Native Corporation. At the time of the census in 2000 ( U.S. Census 2000) Nuiqsut had 433 inhabitants on a land area of 23.9 km ². The median age was 23.8 years ( national U.S. average: 35.3 years ). The per capita income ( per capita income engl. ) amounted to U.S. $ 14,876 ( U.S. National Average: U.S. $ 21,587 ). 2.4 % of residents were with their income below the poverty line ( national U.S. average: 12.4% ) .89,1 % of the residents of Nuiqsut are an indigenous group living in the nationally recognized Indian Reservation Village of Nuiqsut and their old preserve traditions. So the trade and consumption of alcohol in the reserve is not allowed.
