Nuits-Saint-Georges

Nuits -Saint -Georges is a commune with 5557 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Côte-d'Or department in Burgundy in the RN 74 between Beaune and Dijon. The place, with its 20.50 km ² at an altitude 224-516 m above the sea, about 20 km south of Dijon. The municipality is bordered to the north by the wine-growing village of Vosne -Romanée.

History

In the Gallo -Roman period, there was a first settlement, as evidenced by finds. So dedicatory inscriptions were discovered for the God Segomo.

The place was first mentioned in 1060 as annex the land lords of Vergy. He received city rights in 1212 and was attached to 1362. 1870 Nuits -Saint -Georges was the scene of a major battle between the troops of Général Camille Crémer and the Grand Duke of Baden Division under General Adolf von Glümer.

The vineyards of Nuits -Saint -Georges is part of the parent area of the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy wine region. Since 1934 the area Nuits -Saint -Georges has 2 Appellations d' Origine ( AOC short ):

  • AOC Nuits -Saint- Georges: 165 hectares of vineyards, which is exclusively planted with Pinot Noir. The neighboring municipality Premeaux -Prissey may not exceed 12 ha also market under this name.
  • AOC Nuits -Saint -Georges Premier Cru: 152 hectares of vineyards, of which 62 ha in the municipality Premeaux. The names of the Premier Crus are Aux Champs Perdrix, En la Perrière Noblot, Les Damodes, Aux Bourdots, Aux Cras, La Richemonde, Aux Murger, Aux Vignerondes, Aux Chaignots, Aux Thorey, Aux Argillas, Aux Boussellots, Les Perrières, Les Hauts Pruliers, Château Gris, Les Crots, Rue de Chaux, Les Procès, Les Pruliers, Roncière, Les Saint- Georges, Les Cailles, Porrets Les Saint-Georges, Clos des Porrets Saint- Georges, Les Vallerots, Les Poulettes, Les Chaboeufs, Les Vaucrains, Chaînes Carteaux, Clos des Grandes Vignes. The Premier Crus from Premeaux are Clos de la Maréchale, Clos Arlot, Les Terres Blanches, Clos les Didier, Clos des Forêts Saint- Georges, Aux Perdrix Clos des corvées Paget, Clos Saint- Marc, Les Clos des Argillières and Argillières.

Several vintners from Nuits -Saint -Georges own small plots in one of the most famous Grand Cru vineyards of Burgundy, the 50 -acre " Clos de Vougeot ". Approx. 7 km from Nuits -Saint -Georges are in the mountains, the vineyards of the Hautes- Côtes de Nuits. Here, incidentally, the best fruits to grow for the Crème de Cassis, an important ingredient for the church.
