Number Ones is one of Michael Jackson's most successful best-of albums. In the U.S. it has been awarded three times multi-platinum status, which means that the album has sold in the States alone more than six million copies. Especially in the UK where it has positioned itself at the forefront of the album charts in 2003, the album was very successful. In Germany the success was smaller, but the album was awarded a gold record. The best chart position in Germany was ranked second
Reception by the critics
Given the fact that, especially Jackson's earlier songs are mostly appreciated by the critics, most of the reviews were positive also at Number Ones. So Allmusic awarded four out of five stars, as well as the English language Rolling Stone. Eberhard Dobler of Laut.de saw the album a total of more critical and awarded only three out of five stars. "His time as great as it was, it 's over ," the music critic.
Background
The album stands out from a variety of published compilations, Jackson, was his first of this kind, which could reach the charts in all German-speaking countries. After its release, the album was very successful, but after Jackson's death was Number Ones - like many other works of the singer - often sold in August 2009 and was awarded for the third time multi-platinum status. In addition, the album was honored despite the six years previous publication at the American Music Awards 2009.
