Nuneaton [ nʌni tən ː ] is a town in County Nuneaton and Bedworth to the north of the county of Warwickshire in middle England. Nuneaton is the largest town in Warwickshire with 70 721 inhabitants ( 2001). The city is located about 12 km north of Coventry and 40 km east of Birmingham.

History

The name dates from the 12th century Nuneaton and derives from a Benedictine nunnery (English nunnery ) from around which the town was formed. Prior to Nuneaton was a settlement called Etone. The first mention of the modern name comes from the year 1247, in the " nun Eton " is mentioned.

Nuneaton grew since the 17th century because it is located in the center of the coal mines of Warwickshire. In the first national census in 1801 Nuneaton was already one of the largest cities of Warwickshire with about 5,000 inhabitants. During the industrial revolution in the 19th century, a large textile industry developed in Nuneaton. 1901 counted 25,000 residents. During the Second World War Nuneaton was heavily damaged by bombing, and large parts of the city center had to be rebuilt.

Nuneaton is located close to the M6 and M69 Motorways as well as on the highway A5.

The place is a railway junction at the intersection of the West Coast Main Line from London to Liverpool / Manchester with the main route Birmingham - Leicester and a branch line to Coventry. In passenger of Nuneaton railway station by the railway companies Central Trains and Virgin Trains is operated.
