Nunnally Johnson

Nunnally Hunter Johnson ( born December 5, 1897 in Columbus, Georgia, † March 25, 1977 in Hollywood, California ) was an American reporter and screenwriter.

Life

Nunnally Johnson was postmaster in the 1920s reporter for the New York before he moved to Hollywood. He later was with screenplays for Jesse James, man without law (1939 ), The Grapes of Wrath (1940 ) or How to Marry a Millionaire? (1953 ) the most successful screenwriters and worked with renowned directors such as John Ford, Fritz Lang, Robert Siodmak, Howard Hawks and George Cukor, together. For the majority of the films for which he wrote the screenplay, Johnson also worked as a film producer. With eight films he also directed, as for example in The Three Faces of Eve (1957).

In 1941, he was first nominated for his screenplay for The Grapes of Wrath for the Oscar. In 1944 he received a second Oscar nomination, this time for Holy Matrimony. In 1960 Johnaon was honored with a star on the Walk of Fame. The year before, the Writers Guild of America awarded him with the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement.

Johnson was married three times, most recently from 1939 until his death in 1977 with the actress Dorris Bowdon, with whom he had three children. His daughter Marjorie Fowler was editor, his grandson Jack Johnson is an actor.
