Nupe people

The Nupe are a people, which is mainly distributed in the Nigerian state of Niger.

They speak Nupe, a nupoide language. Most Nupe are Muslim, but their culture is both from Islam and from animism coined.

They once had their own state Nupe, which was destroyed by the British colonial power.

Culture

Many Nupe still wear tribal markings in the form of scars on the face, although this tradition is dwindling more and more. Were first described the Nupe and the art and tradition of the African explorer and ethnographer Siegfried Frederick needle (1903-1956), whose book Black Byzantium is one of the anthropological classics.
