Nurcholish Madjid

Nurcholis Madjid, better known as " Cak Nur", ( born March 17, 1939 in Jombang, Java, † 29 August 2005) was an Indonesian Muslim thinker and scholar.

Life

Nurcholis Madjid was born in 1939 the son of a preacher. He spent his youth in Muslim boarding schools. He studied and graduated from the University of Chicago with a Ph.D. in from Islamic Studies. He then returned as a scientist and professor to Indonesia. Madjid has been known for its tolerant and pluralistic settings in the world's largest Muslim nation, Indonesia. It was 2003 presidential candidate.

Nurcholis Madjid died at the age of 66 from cancer. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
