In the south of Ny- Friesland the two highest mountains of Svalbard, the Newtontoppen (1713 m) and the Perriertoppen lie (1712 m). There, the terrain is very rugged and steep cliffs make the ice desert difficult traversable. In the north are the Åsgardfonna and the Valhallfonna two large glaciers.

There are no settlements in Ny- Friesland, expeditions here must be reported to the Sysselmann (Governor ). The eastern coastal belt against the Hinlopen Strait is part of the Northeast Svalbard Nature Reserve. The coastal area on both sides of the innermost bay of the Wijdefjorden form the Indre Wijdefjorden National Park.
