Nyahururu

Nyahururu is with 2303 m the highest town in Kenya. Since a local government reform in 2007 is Nyahururu capital of Nyandarua North District. The city had 1999 32.120 inhabitants, of which 24 751 in the actual city.

Nyahururu was founded by the British colonial administration as Thomson 's Falls. It was named after the Thomson waterfalls on the Ewaso Narok River nearby, the 1888 documented the Scottish geologist Joseph Thomson was the first European. A railway from Gilgil opened in 1929, is now used only for goods. By the Nyahururu road runs between Nyeri and Rumuruti and there is a road to Nakuru.

Due to its height Nyahururu is visited by Kenyan athletes to altitude training.
