Nykarleby

Nykarleby (Finnish Uusikaarlepyy ) is a city in the Finnish landscape Ostrobothnia. More than 90 % of the 7535 population (as of 31 December 2012) have Swedish as their mother tongue.

History

Nykarleby is one of the 15 cities that were established by the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf. The founding document dates of 7 September 1620. Per Brahe the Younger in 1641 had set up the first school in Österbottens Nykarleby, which was later moved to the city of Vaasa.

On January 1, 1975, the previously independent municipalities Jeppo, Munsala and Nykarleby Landskommun were merged to form the present-day city Nykarleby.
