Nykvarn Municipality

Nykvarn is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish Stockholm County and the historic province of Södermanland. The main town of the municipality is Nykvarn. The community is located between the cities of Södertälje and Strängnäs, many residents work in one of the two cities.

History

Archaeological findings show that the area of the community, just like the rest of the territory around the lake Mälaren, was settled years ago, about 5000.

The community itself is still very young. It was formed on 1 January 1999 by split from the municipality of Södertälje. The area consists of the old parishes Turinge and Taxinge. Turinge was a separate municipality until 1970, during Taxinge 1952-1970 was a part of Marie Fred. Between 1971 and 1998, both territories belonged to the municipality of Södertälje.

Attractions

In addition to various tombs of the Stone Age is primarily a runestone of interest, which is presently located in the church of the village Turinge. This stone has a very long inscription and dates from the period around the year 1100.

A newer attraction is the castle of Taxinge, which was begun shortly before or during the 14th century under the direction of Bo Jonsson Grip. The current facade of the palace is decorated in the Empire style of 1813. Many famous guests over the centuries the castle, including Carl Michael Bellman in the 18th century and August Strindberg in the 19th century.
