The star - lily ( Nymphaea nouchali ), is a flowering plant in the family Nymphaeaceae ( Nymphaeaceae ). This water plant is widely used in still waters in Asia and Australasia.

Description

Appearance and leaf

The star water lily is a perennial herbaceous plant. This water plant forms as outlasting upright, unbranched rhizomes.

The leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The simple, herbaceous leaf blade is at a diameter of usually 7 to 15, rarely up to 45 cm elliptical- circular to circular, a few millimeters from the heart-shaped Spreitenbasis away peltate ( Peltatum ). The basal lobes are parallel to spread. The leaf margins are almost smooth notched up deep. The lower leaf surface is bare.

Flower, fruit and seeds

The flowering period extends into China from July to December. On a long flower stalk the flowers stand about above the water surface. The hermaphrodite flowers are spirally constructed with a diameter of 3 to 15 cm with a double perianth. The durable, free sepals are lanceolate to oblong- lanceolate with a length of 2.5 to 8 cm and it is the nerves somewhat recognizable. The 10 to 30 free petals are linear - oblong to lanceolate with a length of 4.5 to 5 cm. The colors of the petals ranging from purple tinted white to blue to purple. The transition from petals to stamens is gradual. There are many stamens present. The stamens of the inner stamens are more or less wider than the anthers. The many carpels are interconnected only partly covered the walls and between the walls of Fruchtkotenkammern are therefore twice. The appendages of the fruit leaves are triangular- conical. It is rare to 8, usually 10 to 30 scars Rays present.

The fruit is spherical with a diameter of 1.5 to 4.5 cm. The case of a diameter from 0.5 to 1.3 mm ellipsoidal spherical seeds have longitudinal rows of hairs ( trichomes ).

The chromosome number is 2n = 28, 56, 84

The wide distribution area extends from the Afghan province of Laghman, Nepal, Pakistan's Sindh province, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and the Chinese provinces of Anhui, Guangdong, Hainan, Hubei and Yunnan to Taiwan and Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines to the Australian states of northern northern Territory and northern Queensland.

Nymphaea nouchali belongs to the subgenus in the genus Nymphaea Brachyceras.

The Nymphaea nouchali with white flower is the national flower of Bangladesh. In Bangladesh coat of arms is a stylized representation of a Nymphaea nouchali. The Nymphaea nouchali with blue flowers is the national flower of Sri Lanka.
