Nymphaion (Crimea)

Nymphaeum (Greek Νυμφαῖον, Νύμφαιον or Νυμφαία ) is an ancient city on the European shores of the Cimmerian Bosporus, about 15 kilometers south of Pantikapaion, near the present-day Kerch on the southeast coast of the Crimea.

The town was founded in the 6th century BC by Greeks in Skythischem area and rose from 444 BC to 400 BC under the suzerainty of Athens, before the ancient city was incorporated into the Bosporan kingdom. In the 4th century, the village was abandoned.

The burial sites of Nymphaeum come from both Greek and from Scythian time ( kurgans ). 1982, a fresco with inscriptions and representations was discovered dating from the 3rd century BC in Nymphaeum.
