Nymphidius Sabinus

Gaius Sabinus Nymphidius († 68) was a Roman praetorian prefect of the 1st century AD

Nymphidius Sabinus was the son of the freedmen Nymphidia. While he later pretended to be illegitimate son of Emperor Caligula, Plutarch reports the rumor that he was the son of a Gladiator named Martianus. He was 65 praetorian prefect of the year. Following the discovery of the conspiracy of Gaius Calpurnius Piso ( Pisonian conspiracy ) was Emperor Nero him the consular insignia. During Nero's stay in Greece (67 /68), he led, together with Tigellinus, who was for 62 praetorian prefect, the government.

When it became Nero's demise, Nymphidius Sabinus betrayed both the Emperor and Tigellinus. He tried to ally with Galba, by securing him the support of the Praetorian Guard. He promised the soldiers that is in the name of Galba a high additional donations. When Galba did not respond to Nymphidius Sabinus was allegedly proclaimed himself emperor. To this end, he was designated by the consul Varro Cingonius a speech issue. At the instigation of Militärtribuns Antonius Honoratus he was killed because of it.
