NZX 50 Index

The NZX 50 Index ( NZ50 ) is the leading stock index in New Zealand. It comprises the 50 largest companies on the New Zealand Exchange.

Calculation

The NZX 50 Index is technically a performance index. It consists of the 50 most traded shares on the New Zealand Exchange ( NZX ) in Wellington, where the stock market turnover of vergangegen six months are crucial. The weighting only the freely tradable securities of public companies are taken into account. When NZX 50 is assumed that all cash dividends and other income from the ownership of shares as of subscription rights and other related values ​​are reinvested in shares of the index.

The dividends are added to the weighted market value of the index: If a distribution to investors, reduces the share price usually by the amount of the dividend. History

20th century

The index was launched on January 31, 1957 under the name Barclays index with a base value of 100 points.

In the 1980s, New Zealand developed from a directed economy with a focus on agriculture to a liberalized industrial nation with a free market that can compete with other Western nations, and is one of the most deregulated and privatized economies in the world. Trading activity and market capitalization grew with the development of the financial market and the private sector. The stock market boom persisted for several years. From November 1982 ( 553.43 points) to November 1986 ( 3790.62 points) of the Barclays index rose by 586 percent. After the bursting of the speculative bubble of the New Zealand benchmark index lost by the end of 1990 ( 1202.86 points) 68.2 percent in value.

On 1 July 1991, the New Zealand Exchange took over the calculation of the index of Barclays. To reflect this change, 40 Index was renamed the Barclays Index in NZSE. Underlying are 1434.98 points, the closing level of the Barclays Index on 28 June 1991.

On 22 October 1997, the NZSE ended 40 trading at 2635.50 points. The Asian crisis led to a sharp outflow of capital from New Zealand. On 5 October 1998, the stock index closed at 1692.15 points, up by 35.8 per cent lower. By 29 April 1999, the Börsenbaromter rose to a closing level of 2292.84 points.

21st Century

After the bursting of the speculative bubble in the technology sector ( dotcom bubble ) and the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001, the NZSE 40 fell to a low of 1789.52 points to 24 September 2001. That was a decline since April 1999 at 21.9 percent. The September 24th, 2001 marked the end of the descent. From the autumn of 2001, the index was back on the way up.

On 3 March 2003, the NZSE 50 Index was replaced as New Zealand 's leading index 40 index by the NZSX. Underlying are 1880.85 points, the closing level of the NZSE 40 index on 28 February 2003. On 1 October 2005, the name was changed in NZX 50 Index.

On 24 May 2007 the share index with a closing level of 4333.24 points, an all time high. That was in September 2001, an increase of 142.1 percent.

In the course of the international financial crisis in the U.S. real estate crisis originated in the summer of 2007, the index began to fall again. From the 3rd quarter of 2008, the crisis had an increasing impact on the real economy. As a result, stock prices plummeted worldwide. On 8 October 2008, the stock market barometer closed at 2948.31 points below the limit of 3,000 points. A new low was achieved by the NZ50 on March 3, 2009, when he finished trading with 2417.95 points. This represents a decline since May 2007 at 44.2 percent.

The March 3, 2009 marked the end of the descent. From the spring of 2009, the New Zealand benchmark index was back on the way up. Until January 11, 2013, increased by 70.9 percent to a closing level of 4131.75 points.
