O mio babbino caro

O mio babbino caro ( " Oh, my dear Daddy " ) is the name of an aria from Giacomo Puccini's one-act opera Gianni Schicchi. The premiere of the opera took place in 1918 with Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi as Il trittico ( The Triptych ) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. The Italian libretto was written by Giovacchino Forzano. O mio babbino caro is the most famous piece of the Opera, which makes Gianni Schicchi will be performed more frequently outside of the triptych. The soprano aria is sung by the daughter of the title character Gianni Schicchi, Lauretta, in the middle of the opera. Lauretta brings it towards her father, her great love for the young Rinuccio expressed that goes so far that she would fall even drowning in the river Arno, if they do not come true. The piece is one of the most famous and popular opera arias, as received, for example, the Australian soprano Joan Hammond in 1969 a gold record for more than 1 million copies sold of the aria under the English title O My Beloved Father.

Text

O mio babbino caro, mi piace è bello, bello; vo'andare in Porta Rossa a comperar l' anello! Sì, sì, ci voglio andare! e se l' amassi indarno, andrei sul Ponte Vecchio, ma by buttarmi in Arno! Wed struggo e mi tormento! O Dio, vorrei morir! Babbo, pieta, pieta!

O my dear Father, I love him, he's so beautiful; I want to go to Porta Rossa to buy the wedding ring! Yes, yes, I want to go there! And if I loved him in vain, I would go to the Ponte Vecchio, and throw myself in the Arno! I destroy and torment me! O God, I want to die! Father, have ' compassion, 've pity!
