O sacrum convivium

O sacrum convivium (Latin for, O holy banquet ') is an antiphon from the mystery of the Eucharist.

Originally O sacrum convivium served as Antiphon to the Magnificat of the (second) Vespers at Corpus Christi. Like all parts of this hard - Offiziums it is attributed to Thomas Aquinas.

It has often been dubbed as the motet, such as Tomás Luis de Victoria, William Byrd, Andrea Gabrieli, Jacobus Gallus, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Michel Pignolet de Montéclair, later by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and in the 20th century by Olivier Messiaen and Rolande Falcinelli.

Before the time of pietism and the Enlightenment it was similar to other medieval texts widely used (for example, membranes Jesu Nostri or Anima Christi ), also in Lutheranism and was sung by the choir during the distribution of communion as musica sub communione or as a motet on Maundy Thursday.

The text reads:

O sacrum convivium, sumitur quo in Christ: recolitur memoria passionis eius, mens impletur gratia et futurae gloriae nobis pignus datur. Alleluia.

O sacred banquet, is consumed at the Christ: The memorial of his Passion is renewed, the mind is filled with grace, and give us a pledge of future glory is given. Hallelujah.
