Oak Lawn is a village in Cook County in the U.S. state of Illinois in the United States. At the 2000 census it had 55.245 inhabitants.

Geography

Oak Lawn is a suburb of Chicago, located 25 km southwest of the city. The municipal area has a size of 22.3 km ².

History

On April 21, 1967 destructive tornado struck the community, Oak Lawn. At 17:30, a tornado touched the estimated strength F4 the ground at Palos Hills. He was reinforced and caused a 26 -km-long path of destruction ( 104 km / h ground speed ) through Oak Lawn, Hometown, Evergreen Park and the south side of Chicago before he moved on to Lake Michigan. 33 people died and there were over 1,000 injured. 152 houses were destroyed and 900 damaged. The damage amounted to a total of $ 50 million.

Oak Lawn Stop Sign Program

2007 Oak Lawn began to supplement their stop sign with humorous signs to bring the vehicle operator to observe the characters more. The billboards were an idea of the mayor and residents were invited to submit their own ideas.

The Federal Highway Administration ( FHWA ) and IDOT expressed concerns about using these non-conforming panels and so these were removed in April 2008. First, refused the mayor, but IDOT threatened to withhold infrastructure funding.

Demographic data

According to the United States Census 2000, there were 55.245 inhabitants in 22,220 households. The population was composed of 93.35 % White, 1.73 % Asian and 1.22 % Black. Hispanics or Latinos represented 5.33% of the population. The per capita income was 23,877 U.S. dollars and 5.4% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Traffic

Oak Lawn has a stops the METRA service that ensures a daily shuttle service between Manhattan and Chicago on the Southwest line.
