Oakham

Oakham is the county seat and the largest city in the English Unitary Authority Rutland in the East Midlands region. In 2001, the community ( civil parish ) numbered 9,975 inhabitants.

Location

Oakham is located 28 km east of Leicester. To the east of Oakham, the Rutland Water covers.

Attractions

  • Oakham Castle ( from the Norman castle is only the Great Hall of the 12th century preserved)

Traffic

The A- road A 606 performs Oakham and connects the village to Melton Mowbray and Nottingham in the North West and Stamford in the East. In the Oakham A 6003 branches off to the south towards Corby and Kettering. Since January 2007, the busy town center is relieved by a ring road.

The Oakham Rail Station is located on the railway line from Peterborough to Birmingham.

Economy

The largest employer is the British branch of the U.S. mail order company Lands' End. From its European warehouse in Oakham mainly customers in the UK and Germany are supplied.
