History
The university was founded in 1957, after Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of automobile manufacturer John Francis Dodge, and her second husband, Alfred Wilson, Michigan State University, the country had bequeathed. First, it was Michigan State University - Oakland named and given its present name until 1963. In 1970, they became fully independent.

The sports teams of the Oakland Golden Grizzlies are OU. The university is a member of the Summit League.
