Oaxtepec is a small town in the district of Yautepec in the northern part of the Mexican state of Morelos with 6197 inhabitants ( 2005).

The origin of the name

Its name comes from the Nahuatl and consists of two root words: huax and Tepec. Huaxin describes an entity belonging to the species of acacia tree, which is known as guaje in Mexico and bears the Latin name Leucaena esculenta. Tepetl means a hill or mountain. Oaxtepec or Huaxtepec how the town was originally called, thus means Guaje Mountain or Mount of Guaje trees.

History

The former Huaxtepec was before the arrival of the Spanish invaders in 1521 an important settlement. In this region belongs to the family of the tribe of Aztecs Tlahuica whose largest cities Cuauhnahuac (today Cuernavaca ) and Huaxtepec were alive.
