Ob, Russia

Whether (Russian Обь ) is a town in Novosibirsk Oblast (Russia) with 25,382 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the southeastern part of the West Siberian Plain, approximately 15 km west of the Oblasthauptstadt Novosibirsk, but not directly on the river Ob, after which it was named. The climate is continental.

The city is the Oblast Whether subordinated administratively directly.

Immediately northwest of the city is the airport Novosibirsk Tolmachevo.

History

Near the present town was founded around 1850, the village Tolmachevo, towards the end of the 19th century in connection with the construction of the Trans -Siberian railway, a settlement at the same station. In 1934 it was renamed the Ob, which in 1947 became the urban-type settlement and received city rights in 1969.
