Shelter is a market town with 2065 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Mur Valley in Styria. The municipality is located in the judicial district Jews castle. From 1 January 2015, is the framework of the Styrian municipality structural reform with the communities Amering, Santa Anna joined the Lavantegg and Sankt Wolfgang - Kienberg, the new community will be called " shelter " to continue.

Geography

Geographical Location

Shelter is located in the valley of Granitzenbaches north of Obdacher saddle, the transition from the Upper Mur Valley in the Lavant Valley. The municipal area extends from the valley to the west of the Seetal Alps with the highest peaks, the Zirbitzkogel ( 2,396 m).

Neighboring municipalities are, from the north clockwise beginning: Oberweg, Sankt Wolfgang - Kienberg, Amering, Sankt Anna am Lavantegg, mills and Kulm am Zirbitz.

The municipality comprises the following four localities ( in parentheses population as of 31 October 2011):

The municipality comprises the cadastral Granitzen and shelter.

History

Shelter was first documented in 1190. Shelter in 1324 was raised to the market and also had a high court. Shelter was a regionally important trading center on the road over the Obdacher saddle.

The municipality shelter was built in 1849 /50. On 1 January 1970, the Association of community Granitzen carried out with the market town shelter.

Population

The municipality had 2001 2.193 inhabitants according to the census. 97.6 % of the population possess Austrian citizenship. For the Roman Catholic Church to 91.3 % of the population profess the Protestant Church 1.1% and Islam 1.8%, 4.7 % have no religious confession.

Economy and infrastructure

According to Census of 2001, there are 99 workplaces with 873 employees in the community as well as 519 and 463 commuter commuters. There are 91 agricultural and forestry enterprises ( of which 32 are in the main acquisition ), which together manage 3,114 ha ( 1999).

The most important industrial operation is Maschinenfabrik ALKO (especially lawn mowers) with around 250 employees.

The transport infrastructure is via the Obdacher Road ( B78 ), which connects the Carinthia's Lavant Valley with the Mur valley. Shelter is a railway station on the Lavanttalbahn.

In shelter there is a kindergarten, a primary school and a secondary school.

There are three municipal offices, as well as the local governments of the neighboring communities Sankt Wolfgang - Kienberg and Santa Anna are located in the main town on Lavantegg shelter.
