Oberlahnstein is a district of Lahnstein in Rhein- Lahn-Kreis in Rhineland- Palatinate. By 1969 the place was an independent district town.

Location

Oberlahnstein is on the right side of the Rhine and on the left side of the Lahn, at the mouth of the Lahn with the Rhine.

History

Oberlahnstein formed with the Lahneck the northernmost exclave of the Electorate of Mainz. Ecclesiastical belonged Oberlahnstein until its dissolution in 1803 after the archbishopric of Trier.

In the 19th century, in Nassau time, it became an important railway junction as the endpoint of Nassau Rheinbahn of Wiesbaden and the Lahn Valley Railway from Wetzlar. This function was transferred largely to the acquisition of Nassau State Railway by Prussia after the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 on the stations Niederlahnstein and Koblenz Hbf.

Today the Roman Catholic inhabitants of Upper Lahnstein belong to the diocese of Limburg, the Protestant inhabitants of the Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau.

On June 7, 1969 Oberlahnstein was united with the neighboring city Niederlahnstein the Great district town of Lahnstein.
