Place name

The name " Ried " can be interpreted in two ways: from the Old High German Riod, reoth ( clearing) or from the Swiss German Ried ( overgrown with reeds and marsh grass land ). However, it should be noted for low and Oberried on Lake Brienz, that these villages are situated on steep, sunny side and dry slopes of Riedergrates. Perched high on the Harder, Rieder and Brienzergrat to also provide several corridors name " Ried ": " Ried " in Ringgenberg Mountain, " vineyards " on a slope north above Niederried, " vineyards " on a slope above the village of Upper Ried and " Gäldried "a station on the Rothorn Bahn. This Ried certainly can not be associated with reeds but rather with " Riod, reaoth " clearing. This suggests the importance of using the Brienz " Ried " well to clear. This low- Ried was founded on Lake Brienz in all probability once by the Alemanni in a lower and upper Ried on Lake Brienz in an upper clearing. With the many suitable for house building dry corridors on Lake Brienz villages it will probably not come to the settlers in the sense to nominate their communities after the extremely rare here so flat and swampy and useless for them Moesern.

First mention: . April 15, 1303 In a dispute between the Lords of Ringgenberg and the Capuchin monks around the forest between Iseltwald and Bönigen among others, the witnesses and " free peasants " were: " Rudolf called Johner of Obirnriet " and " Cunrad called Risser of Obirnriet " mentioned.

Oberried FR located in the Bernese Oberland on the north shore of Lake Brienz. The neighboring communities of north clockwise are starting Fluhli, Brienz, Niederried and Habkern. The highest mountain is the Tannhorn ( 2221 m. Above sea level. M. ).

1914, until then independent municipality was merged with Upper Ebligen Ried.

Since 1863, the fireworks factory Hans Hamberger exists in Upper Ried. On July 30, 1959 at 9.35 clock 10 employees came in a large explosion killed. Since this tragic accident is only in small, separate, work buildings.

The bridge at Hirscherengraben the main road towards Brienz is designed so that it is carried out in an avalanche in Lake Brienz. In some winters, the bridge was destroyed several times by avalanches. The avalanches breaking on Brienzergrat going to almost 2000 meters above sea level and then thunder often up into Lake Brienz to 564 m. ü. M., while the horizontal distance between Brienzergrat and Brienz is only just 2300 meters.

Upper Ried is by train ( Central Railway, formerly Brünigbahn ), car and boat accessible. In winter, the railway line and the main road is sometimes closed due to avalanches or threat. In such cases, the ships that would otherwise operate only in summer drive, exceptionally in the winter.
