Obersaxen

Obersaxen (Romansh Sursaissa? / I ) is a municipality in the district of Ruis, District Surselva the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

Geography

The community, a Walser German speaking enclave (Upper Saxer German ) under otherwise Romansh language area, is located on the right side of the valley of the young Rhine on the north flank of Piz Mundaun in the middle Surselva. The terrace extends over a length of about 14 km. The populated part of the municipality lies between 1000 m ( Axenstein ) and 1430 m ( Miraniga ). The Hofansiedlungen are typical of a Walser community. In the far-flung 28 yards about 800 inhabitants live in an intact environment. All the farms together form the municipality Obersaxen. The highest mountain of Obersaxen is the black horn with 2'890 m above sea level. M. The better known mountain, however, is the Piz Val Gronda with 2,820 m above sea level. M.

In the field of community Obersaxen lie the ruins of castles Moregg, Black Stone, Saxenstein and Heideberg above Tavanasa.

Economy

From the former farming community a tourism community has grown. Several hotels and pensions, about 1400 apartments and various summer camps are available to holiday guests. Through performance transport facilities provide the skiing and hiking area on Piz Mundaun is well developed. Agriculture plays in the community even today a large role.

Traffic

The village is connected with the post bus line 451 with the station Ilanz the Rhaetian Railway. The bus also serves the valley station Grange Piz Mundaun.

The coat of arms of the Barons of Rhäzuns that received by the settlement of the Walser rights Obersaxen is complemented by the key, the symbol of the Apostle Peter, who was presented to the 14th century in the seal.

2010, Obersaxen in alpine skiing, both the World Cup and the European Cup overall winner with Janka During the first Swiss won with Christian Spescha for 18 years, Spescha reüssierte the first confederate for 9 years.

The Obersaxen Mundaun ski area includes 15 installations and 120 kilometers of ski runs. The highest motorable mountain is Piz Sezner with 2,310 m above sea level. M.
