Obersee (Lake Constance)

As the larger of the two lakes, Upper Lake Constance is called.

It is 472 km ² and stretches over 63 km between Bregenz and Bodman- Ludwigshafen. Its greatest width is 14 km. In Roman times it was called Lacus Venetus, Lacus Lacus Brigantinus and Constantinus. In the Middle Ages the name Lacus Bodamicus (Bodensee) prevailed. Under this term gradually fell also the underwater world ( Lacus Acronius ), so the actual Constance was called Upper Lake. The upper lake drained by the shipyard, in Konstanz in the submarine, main tributary is the Alpine Rhine. Parts of the upper lake are the Lake Überlingen, the Bay of Bregenz and Constance funnel, commonly Überlingen Lake is also considered as a separate part of the lake and therefore with upper lake colloquially only the section between Bregenz and Constance is meant.

Riparian countries are Switzerland with the cantons of Thurgau and St. Gallen, Austria with the state of Vorarlberg, and Germany with the states of Baden -Württemberg and Bavaria. The borders between the countries bordering on the south-eastern part of the upper main lake have never been defined (for further explanations under Lake Constance), only the smaller northwestern Lake Überlingen is completely German territory.
