Obertraun
Obertraun is a municipality in Upper Austria's Salzkammergut region in the district of Gmunden Traun quarter with 732 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). The municipality is located in the judicial district of Bad Ischl.
Since 1997 part of the area around Obertraun and Hallstatt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Geography
Obertraun is located on 513 m altitude in Traun quarter at Lake Hallstatt. The extension is from north to south 13.4 kilometers, 11.6 kilometers from west to east. The total area is 88.4 km ², 15.5% of the area is forested. Within the area are the Hirzkarseen and Koppenwinkellacke.

History
Originally in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria lying, was the place since the 12th century the Duchy of Austria. "Upper Traun " is first mentioned in 1325 in Upper Austria Traun Stiftsurbarium churches. Since 1490 the area of the Principality of Austria above the Enns attributed. During the Napoleonic Wars, the place was occupied several times. Since 1918, the town belongs to the province of Upper Austria. Obertraun is an independent municipality since 1920, and previously was the district of the market town of Hallstatt. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on 13 March 1938, the town belonged to the " Upper Danube ". After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria.
1954 there is a " Heilbronner Dachstein misfortune ": 10 Heilbronner students and 3 teachers come with a sudden fall in the Dachstein area killed.

The motif of 1971 conferred municipality coat of arms refers to the chain by a cable car to the tourism -developed, towering over Lake Hallstatt Dachstein region with its show caves; the emblem includes the discoveries of skeletal remains of cave bears (Ursus spelaeus ) from the Early Stone Age in King Arthur 's Cathedral of Rieseneishöhlen ( "Bear Cemetery "). In the last interglacial period the climate was so favorable that the cave could still be found in the high mountain regions sufficiently plant food. Natural Monuments:
Dachsteinhöhlen
Since their discovery in 1910, this show caves (Dachstein Giant Ice Cave, Dachstein Mammoth Cave and Koppenbrüllerhöhle ) are among the most famous natural monuments in Austria. They are open to the public for guided tours, but also for scientific investigations. They are accessible by cable car from the upper Traun to Schönbergalm ( 1338 m), which has been modernized in 2007 and completely rebuilt. The Dachstein caves consist of the Giant (2000 m, electrically since 1928 lit ), one of the largest underground ice landscapes of Central Europe, with around 200,000 visitors a year, and the Mammoth Cave ( 62 km Total passage length, some impressive transitions ), one of Europe's largest limestone caves. The caves were made in 1928 under nature protection.

Winter sports:
Above Obertraun is the Free Sports Arena Krippenstein ski area with 30 km of off piste routes from easy to extreme. However, many variants for those unfamiliar with are dangerous because you can fall into sinkholes and caves. A special attraction is the 11 km long valley run with a difference in altitude of 1500 m.
In a comparison in the 01/2006 issue of Ski & winter sports magazine Planet Snow were the Free Arena Krippenstein voted the best freeride spot in the Alps.

He is far beyond the borders of Austria recognized mountain guide and mountain instructor. Outstanding is its position as a pioneer of alpine safety and associated training courses.

Tourism and Tourism
In 1895, in the small village of Upper Traun, which was then still a village of the municipality of Hallstatt, founded an association for local beautification and promotion of tourism. This is the cornerstone of tourism in the community. In the same decade, the first summer visitors come to Obertraun. In 1909, further research into the Koppenbrüllerhöhle is taken up by locals and members of the Linz nature lovers. A year later, the Ice Cave and Mammoth Cave are explored. In 1947 started the construction of the Dachstein cable cars, and 4 years later, the operation is begun. During this time, in 1948, the investments of the Federal Sports School arise.
The Hallstatt is used for bathing and fishing.
