Oberwaldberg

The upper forest mountain is 145 meters above sea level, the highest point in the district of Groß-Gerau. It was created from a garbage dump and is one of the few mountains, whose genesis is fully documented.

Location, size

The upper mountain forest is located just 3 km east of the center Mörfeldens of the A5, north west of the junction Long -Mörfelden in the district Mörfelden. It has a maximum north - south distance of 700 meters with a width of 270 meters and covers an area of almost 20 hectares.

History

The original Mörfelder upper forest, which is the mountain and the adjacent upper forest lake its name, has largely disappeared by the construction of roads and gravel mining. Also, in place of the mountain today's gravel was mined to the period after the Second World War. In 1957, the mine was converted by the then independent town of Mörfelden to the dump. From 1972, here is the entire waste the Groß -Gerau was deposited, until the closure of about 4 million m³.

As early as 1982, a waterproof layer of clay had been drafted. From about 1985, the pit volume was filled up to the top and the landfill grew gradually to the hill. After the closure of the waste was encapsulated by an outer cover made of waterproof clay was applied. The inside collecting water is collected at wells and returned to the mountain to stop the process of decay of waste in motion. The generated during organic decomposition process landfill gas is converted into a power plant of the waste management center Südhessen (AWS ) in electricity, in 2006 about 300 kWh per day with further decreasing tendency. Downtime of the small power plant can be identified by that then a gas torch is ignited, burns the gas produced.

After the landfill aftercare plan in 2016 can be ended and the mountain are fully released.

Leisure and Tourism

Due to the still running gas formation only two ways to lying 45 m above the valley floor Upper Forest Plateau are currently released, the rest planted with shrubs and trees area is still fenced. In 2006, the AWS has built a viewing platform, from which one of the surrounding gravel pit lakes and villages, up to Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt Airport and southeast to the Odenwald has a very good view.
