Obi Islands

The Obi Islands, also called Ombirah, are a group of islands belonging to Indonesia in the Moluccas. They are located in the south of the province of Maluku Utara ( " North Moluccas " ) about halfway between Ternate in the north and the island of Ambon in the South.

Main island of Obi

Obi, also Obira or Obi Major is forested, mountainous and partly dense in the interior, the highest point in the island reaches 1611 meters. The expansion of the island is in the east-west direction of 84 km, from north to south 47 km. Agriculture and fishing used to self-sufficiency. For export timber is wrapped in a large scale, along with copra and cocoa beans are marketed. A 130 square kilometers of forested area is to be designated as a nature reserve, at the same time there is the industrial mining of nickel ore in the testing phase. The main town Laiwui on the coast in the north has the only boat dock on the island for the landing of passenger ships. The center of town is just one kilometer away from the dock. The other, located along the coastal settlements are accessible from ships only by changing to small boats. Obi is not served by Pelni ships, there are regular connections with smaller ships over the southern neighboring island of Ambon and Gomumu with a stopover at the island Bisa with the main town on the island of Bacan Labuha.

Smaller islands

Large sections of the coast consist of mangroves, some sago palms serve as a food source. In addition to the main island include numerous smaller islands to the Obi Islands include the following:
