Object Data Management Group

The Object Database Management Group ( ODMG short ) is an association of manufacturers of object-oriented database systems to develop common norms and standards. The ODMG 3.0 has stopped working after the release of the release; currently the Object Management Group (OMG ) is working on Release 4

History

Motivation for the standardization were creating a portability standard, not that of a interoperability standards.

The first annual report was the ODMG -93 Release 1.1 in 1994. This was followed by versions 1.2 ( August 1995 ) and 2.0 ( March 1997). Release 3.0 introduced in September 1999, improvements in the Java binding, the object model as well as in the OR - mapping (ORM ) a.

Participating companies were SunSoft, Object Design, Ontos, O2 Technology, Versant and Objectivity. As a reviewer acted Hewlett -Packard, Poet, Itasca, intellitic, DEC, servio and Texas Instruments.

Components

The object model is based on the OMG model. The data definition language is the programming language independent Object Definition Language (ODL ), a specification language for describing data objects. It is to the OMG IDL - compatible. ODMG in standard transformation rules from the ODL to C and Smalltalk have been defined. The translation of the ODL in a programming language or database is supported by tools.
