Observation Tower Burgholzhof

The observation tower Burgholzhof is a 25 meter high observation tower in the Stuttgart district Burgholzhof with extensive views of Stuttgart-Ost, Bad Cannstatt and the Neckar valley to Esslingen am Neckar.

In 1891 the Stuttgart municipal architect Friedrich Keppler built on behalf of the company founded only recently Improvement Society Cannstatt at the highest point of the 359 -meter high castle Holzhofs a brick observation tower in the style of a Roman watchtower. The festive inauguration took place in the presence of the Württemberg Crown Prince Wilhelm on September 19, 1891. The construction is in the context of general antiques enthusiasm in the German Empire, especially Kaiser Wilhelm II, and in a close temporal connection with the 1904 started construction of a dragoon barracks on the ruins of the nearby Roman fort Cannstatt.

During the Second World War, the tower was used as an observation post against approaching Allied bombers. In the years 1987/88 he was rehabilitated at the initiative of the Pro Alt Cannstatt and has since been opened and hosted in the summer of different clubs with free admission.
