Observatorio Astronómico de Mallorca

The planetarium is located in Mallorca Costitx on the Balearic island of Mallorca. It is operated by the Mallorcan organization for Astronomy ( OAM ), which operates in addition to this also the easternmost Planetarium Observatory of Spain ( Observatorio Astronomico de Mallorca).

Special

Inaugurated in May 1991, the observatory is the only astronomical center of the Balearic Islands. The funding from the Balearic Government ( Department of Culture, Education and Sports ), the savings bank La Caixa, the city administration Costitx and the OAM had two aims: firstly, to promote research within the framework of the GEA (Association for the Study of Astrophysics ) and the guidelines of the Canary Islands observatory and on the other hand familiarization with astronomy for pupils, students and other interested persons. The observatory is also used for scientific work: So here are some new asteroids were discovered, which is no longer occurred in Spain since 1941.

In addition to the observatory, a planetarium was built, which is topped by a 14 -foot metal dome, in which the technologically advanced planetarium projector is ZKP3 Zeiss Skymaster. This apparatus can project with the highest precision six thousand stars, which corresponds to the view of the stars under the sky from any point on Earth. The central main projector is coupled with another 30 additional projectors, video and panoramic projectors that are located in a circular room with seating for 110 people. Furthermore, since 2009 is a Digistar system in operation, as it is also used eg in Mediendom the Fachhochschule Kiel.

The Mallorcan planetarium is the only one in Europe that can project images from telescopes in real time, which can be located either in the connected observatory, or even in distant places, and controlled remotely via the Internet. This is through a specially of O.A.M. developed software possible.

The installations are equipped with a AstroMedia hall, is organized in the exhibitions. At present there to see an interesting selection of meteorites. The largest are up to 60 kilograms. Visitors to the planetarium also gets an insight into the connected Observatory, which houses an impressive hall with ten portable telescopes.
