Obsolete and nonstandard symbols in the International Phonetic Alphabet

The list of former IPA characters contains all the characters that once were part of the international phonetic alphabet, but have either been replaced or removed entirely.

In its history, the international phonetic alphabet was changed several times. These changes were aimed to unify the phonetics to complement or simplify. In particular, the revisions of 1976, 1989 and 1993 have changed the phonetic transcription.
