Occasional Oratorio

An Occasional Oratorio (HWV 62) is an oratorio by George Frideric Handel, which is based on a libretto by Newburgh Hamilton after a poem by John Milton and Edmund Spenser.

Handel composed the Occasional Oratorio hastily in January and February 1746 the premiere took place on 14 February 1746. It contains 44 sets and consists of 3 parts. The famous choir Prepare the Hymn, a paraphrase of Psalm 81, 1-2, is the 26th set, Part 2. The second minuet of Fireworks Music Handel took from this oratorio.
