Occupy Nigeria

Occupy Nigeria is a series of protests against the shutdown of oil subsidies by the government of Goodluck Jonathan on January 1, 2012 in Nigeria.

Although Nigeria is Africa's largest crude oil exporter, it is dependent on imports of refined gasoline from abroad. About 2.4 million barrels of crude oil exported daily. The national refineries were neglected mainly due to the widespread corruption in the country. As a result, Nigeria, despite the oil-rich own gasoline demand not cover and to 70% in order to guarantee the supply.

Overnight the price of petrol has more than doubled. From 65 Naira ( ~ € 0.30) per liter in late 2011, at least 141 naira (~ € 0.70) on 1 January 2012.
