Ocean liner

As a ship of the line (English ocean liner ) is referred to in the merchant navy a merchant ship that commutes on a regular schedule on a route between fixed locations. For systems that cross the oceans we speak of liner shipping. On inland waters operate ships of the line under the Börtschifffahrt.

Unlike ferries, bridge the relatively short distances, commuting ships of the line of merchant shipping on much longer sea routes, often even between continents, and usually stop at several stations. Before the intercontinental aviation battleships for individuals offered the fastest and safest way to cross the oceans and were essential for the transport of mail overseas. Today battleships are mostly container ships.

Probably the most famous and prestigious line connection of the story is between Southampton and New York. It is frequented by many famous ships of the line, such as the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mary, the Titanic or the United States.
