Features

The wings are gray and have a black eponymous colon on the front wings on. Otherwise, the moth the birch owl moth ( Tetheella fluctuosa ) looks similar to its smaller size. The wavy cross bands on the forewings are strongly washed out and poorly visible.

Occurrence

The animals are in central and northern Europe and Asia, east to take to Japan. In addition to wet heathland, lowland forests and copses they also prefer woodlands with high humidity and the banks of rivers.

Way of life

Flight times and caterpillars

The moths fly in two generations from mid-May to mid-July and from late July to mid-September. The second generation is incomplete in some areas, or missing altogether. The caterpillars from the eggs of the first generation can be found from August to October, the second from June to July of the following year.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed on birches (Betula ), alder ( Alnus ) and poplars (Populus ).

Development

The caterpillars live together between spun leaves. They overwinter as a pupa.
