Ochtum

Ochtum in Weyhe - Kirchweyhe

Ochtum on Ochtumsperrwerk

The Ochtum is an approximately 26 km long left tributary of the Weser River, which flows from Lower Saxony to Bremen.

Course

The Ochtum created in Lower Saxony only a few miles south of Bremen in Weyhe by the union of the Süstedter Bach and the Hache in Kirchweyher lake. As its only outlet the Ochtum flows to the northwest in the state of Bremen, forming partly the border to Lower Saxony. It flows through or passes through the city and Bremer districts Katte Esch, Huchting and electricity and crosses the Links der Weser park and nature reserve Ochtumniederung at Brokhuchting. Over time, the Ochtum was repeatedly redesigned. A second Ochtumarm runs north past Grolland and joins in the nature reserve at Brokhuchting with the main run. The Ochtum abuts Delmenhorst Hasbergen and Lemwerder - Deichhausen and flows between Lemwerder - Altenesch and Bremen -Seehausen on the Ochtumsperrwerk at lower Weser River 12.85 kilometers into the Weser. West of the mouth there is a dead channel, the "Old Ochtum ", from the time before the river regulation.

Storage polder

Below Huchtings the Ochtumniederung is characterized before the main dikes by a system of dikes memory protected by summer polders, which are filled in sections at high water by well-defined overflow points on the side facing away from the West and North West windward. Through this system of summer polders will ensure that flood a significantly delayed only reach the main dike lines. In the 1962 storm surge, this remained without effect as the polder were already completely filled during the Vortide the early afternoon of 16 February and could not be emptied in the next low tide. The Haupttide in the night from 16th to 17th February thus met completely filled polders.

The presence of this system of polders memory could be dispensed with the establishment of an additional pumping station during the construction of Ochtumsperrwerks the estuary. Task of memory Polder it is since commissioning of the barrage to take in case the storm surge brought up by the tributaries of the Ochtum water.

History

Environment

In the years 1989/1990 was carried out on a portion of the relocation of the Ochtum with extensive restoration measures and decisive participation of the Water Management Office Bremen. There was a meandering river with naturally designed shore and shallow water zones and formed the backbone of the " Ochtumparks ".

According to water quality map of Bremen from 2000, the Ochtum was up to the area of Bremen - power, moderately polluted in Class II, classified. In May 2002, the fish population has been studied in Huchting; therefore bream are the most common fish, but there are roach, eels and silver bream. Through the Weser River from the Tide is affected, so that also flows into salt water from the North Sea. At high tide the Ochtumsperrwerk prevents flooding of adjacent lands.

Economy and Transport

Until the 1950s, the Ochtum was as a transport route for the transport of goods - especially for the transport of peat from the bog devil that was used as a fuel - used. Hubs were, inter alia, on Hasberger jam of Delme, below the Hasberger watermill and Bre - current. Both the Hasberger Delme storage, as well as the Ochtumstau in Bremen- power had been provided for this reason, when they are set with locks. The traffic was carried over the centuries with the common hallway ships in the region. Later motorized Tjalken were used, cite the private charging stations in the river section to the Hasberger Ochtumstau.

Another unused by the commercial shipping port was located directly at the location Ochtum. He served until the mid -1970s, the handling of building materials, especially sand and gravel. After the establishment of Ochtumsperrwerkes this port was installed in the summer of 1976 in the area below the barrage. This hub is used for the loading of rotor blades for offshore wind farms since the end of 2011. The total flow area above the barrage is closed to commercial shipping. An exception to this is merely vehicles for driving water entertainment.

Today the Ochtum only clubs for water sports as well as isolated from the passenger shipping (charter boat trip ) is used as a transport route. The paths to the Ochtumdeichen are popular bicycle and inline skaters ways.
