It accepts raster graphics in Netpbm formats ( PBM, PGM, PPM), in addition 8 -bit encoded text output in UTF -8, and provides automatic detection of page designing. It is written in C . It is based on feature extraction, ie the extraction of features of a character.

The program is distributed as free software in the source code under the terms of version 3 or later of the GNU General Public License ( GPL). It can be installed directly from the standard repositories of most popular Linux distributions.

There are various programs that offer as a graphical front-end: the former KDE Kooka scanning software or the desktop OCR Suite OCRFeeder.

Performance

Compared with the similar GOCR it requires the page design recognition and is reputed to generally provide slightly better results. Thus, it was up to the release of Tesseract in 2005 (2006? ) Next GOCR one of the best and most commonly used OCR softwares from the fields of free software and Linux software. In addition to common good commercial software the recognition performance are clearly defeated.
