Ocrasa

Ocrasa glaucinalis

Ocrasa is a butterfly genus from the family of European corn borer ( Pyralidae ). In Europe, four species are found in German-speaking countries there are two.

Features

The species of the genus Ocrasa reach a wingspan up to about 32 millimeters. The front wings are usually more than twice as long as wide. The ground color of the upper side of the forewing is mostly a dark to light brown, which can be yellowish to reddish. In a few species, other colors also occur. Characteristic are two lighter transverse lines, which are almost always formed clearly on the front wings, the hind wings are but usually paler. The transverse lines may be nearly straight to curved; on the front edge can be significantly thickened. Their color varies from whitish to yellowish. On the hind wings the two transverse lines are closer together; the external cross- line is further away from the outer edge. The forewings fields can be uniformly colored or different. The antennae of the males are ciliated short and twice that of the females, however, are simple and thready.

Distribution and occurrence

The species of the genus are found worldwide. They prefer warm, dry habitats in the open, bush -lined landscapes.

Way of life

The moths are mostly nocturnal, fly some for daytime as well as at night. The caterpillars feed mainly on plant detritus (hay, straw, leaves ). They live in tubes spun in the detritus. In many species, the development cycle is poorly known.

Synonymy

The genus has two synonyms: Bleone Ragonot, 1890 and Orthopygia Ragonot, 1890 Some species have also been described under the generic name Herculia. . However, this name is a junior synonym of Hypsopygia Hübner, 1825. Slamka (2006) leads Ocrasa as a subgenus of Hypsopygia Hübner, 1825. Contrast, it is regarded as a separate genus of Globiz. The Fauna Europaea accepted Orthopygia Ragonot, 1890 as a subgenus of Ocrasa.
