Ocre

Ocre is a municipality with 1133 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the province of L' Aquila

Location and data

Ocre is located in the natural park Velino - Sirente. It is located 13 kilometers south-east of the regional capital L' Aquila at the foot of the homonymous mountain (2200 m). Ocre consists of the fractions San Panfilo ( council offices ), San Felice, San Martino Valle and Cavalletto and borders the municipalities of Fossa, L'Aquila, Rocca di Cambio, Rocca di Mezzo and Sant'Eusanio Forconese.

History

The valley of the Aterno was inhabited in pre-Roman times. To 293 BC the area was Roman. To 940 Ocre is first mentioned. Since 1178 is mentioned, which is likely to be the castle of the capital of San Panfilo by a fortress in Ocre.

1226 the monastery of Santo Spirito was (Holy Spirit), which was transferred in 1248 to the Cistercian Order founded in Ocre.

As L' Aquila was founded in the 13th century, Ocre gained strategic importance, because you could control from the castle, a large portion of 140 meters below the city. During this time, the exposed Franciscan Convent of San Angelo was founded.

Until 1806 Ocre was a county ( barony ), last of the family - Ocre Bonanni, whose descendants still live in part in Ocre. The castle was owned by the family Bonanni - Ocre.

Mayor of Ocre is since March 30, 2010 Fausto Fracassi from the Lista civica. His predecessor (since 2004) was Gianmatteo Riocci of the center- left-leaning citizens list.

Curiosities
