Octanal is a fruity -smelling, colorless or yellowish liquid from the class of aldehydes. The trivial name is caprylaldehyde.
Representation
Octanal can be synthesized by hydroformylation of 1-heptene, or by oxidation of 1 -octanol.
Use
Octanal contained in paints and varnishes. It is the starting material for synthetic fragrances such as rose oil or lemon oil
