Biography

Player

His nickname La Pulga ( German: the flea), the vial had received in his youth because of its small body size, speed and dynamics should accompany him for a lifetime.

At the age of ten years came la Pulga Vial in 1930 on the invitation of officials of the Real Club España in the junior level. He felt, however, not well joined and therefore prefer to Lusitania, a club from the Colonia Roma. In a game between Lusitania and America whose coach became aware of Vial, because it always has been dangerous for his team when Ocatvio came to the ball. Immediately after the game, he walked up to the young people and offered him a contract with America. Vial wasted no time and since then belonged to the team of Club América.

For the first time he wore the jersey América 1936. His league debut Mayor he gave in May 1937 in a game against the Real Club España, in which it was not like him at that time. At the end of his first season (1937 /38) he won with his team in the Copa México. Ten years later forced him a broken fibula in the season 1948/49, to end his playing career.

Coach

The following season, 1949/50, he took over as coach at Club América and thus was the immediate successor of Rafael Garza Gutiérrez, who had coached the club until then and was 33 years previously involved in its creation. Garza Gutiérrez introduced in the same year the Mexican national team for the 1950 World Cup, in which also Octavio Vial had succeeded him and the Mexicans looked after during the World Cup, where they were but absolutely no chance and all games ( 0-4 against hosts Brazil, 1: lost 4 against Yugoslavia and 1-2 against Switzerland). After the World Cup and a total of five international matches (the other two were up matches end in May 1950 against Spain, which ended with 1:3 and 0:0), he resigned from his position as national coach and devoted himself exclusively to club football.

In the season 1950/51 he took over the CF Atlante - successor of Lusitania, where he spent some years of his youth - and led him to the Cup victory in 1951 and the runner-up in the same year. He then took over again for several years as coach at Club América and led him to the Cup victory in 1954 and 1955 as well as winning the Super Cup in 1955. Using the three-time winning the Copa México Vial is as a coach record cup winners of this competition.

It is interesting that he was three times Cup winner as a trainer and in the final each of the team of Club Deportivo Guadalajara was defeated. It is also noteworthy that Vial - as a player and coach - a total of four times Cup winner, but not a single time champion.
