Octopodiformes

Vampyropoda

  • Vampire squid Similar ( Vampyromorpha )
  • Kraken ( Octopoda )
  • Cirrentragende Kraken ( Cirroctopoda )

The group of eight-armed squid ( Octopodiformes or Vampyropoda ) include the "Octopus in the strict sense " ( Octopoda ), the Cirrentragenden Kraken ( Cirroctopoda ) and the vampire squid -like ( Vampyromorpha ). They are distinguished by the possession of eight arms. The vampire squid -like hold between the first two pairs of arms ( counted from the head ) or a pair of retractable filaments, which are used as sensory organs. Demonstrate the early development of the egg of the eight-armed squid and the intermediate position of the vampire squid -like, that the group descended from the original zehnarmigen squid. The oldest representatives of the eight-armed squid are known from the Carboniferous. However, this finding is controversial. Secure members of the group are known from the Rhaetian of the Upper Triassic.
