Octospora

The foam cup molds ( Octospora ) are a genus of Ascomycota rights of the family of fire pillow relatives ( Pyronemataceae ).

Features

The foam cup warmers are mostly found to be in close proximity or directly on mosses with which they are associated. Your apothecia are cup - or bell-shaped with a typical Hyphenstruktur at the edges: The excipulum is mostly made up of intertwined hyphae, which are parallel to the edge. Some species are vividly colored. The partially counted among the moss cup Lingen species of the genus Neottiella have thick-walled, colorless hair, Octospora s.str. not against it. The asci are mostly achtsporig. The ascospores can be smooth or warty.

Ecology

The foam cup warmers live bryophil, that is, they live associated with mosses. Very often they are species-specific, such as the Common moss Polytrichum cup Ling on piliferum. In many of them a parasitism has been demonstrated. The species were not cleaved from moosbewohnenden Octospora and described as a new species ( Kotlabaea ), but also more recently non -bound moss species have been identified that belong to Octospora. Perry et al. (2007) conclude from their study that the moss socialization was either once arose in the course of evolution, and then given up twice again, or arisen independently twice and was once again abandoned. The species of the genus Octospora are very wirtsspezfisch, knowledge of infested moss is important for the correct determination of the species.

System

Although the genus of moss cup warmers ( Octospora ) has already been described very early, namely in 1789 by Johannes Hedwig, it is still not clearly defining the concept. So there are a number of synonyms, and try to split it into several genera. According to recent phylogenetic studies Octospora belongs together with the closely related genera also bryophilen Neottiella and Lamprospora in the clade 4 within the Pyronemataceae. The clade includes all moosparasitierenden genera of the family. Neotiella and Lamprospora be questioned by some authors to Octospora, but at least Lamprospora is clearly different. Octospora and Neottiella are not monophyletic, which probably makes the redivision into two groups in the near future. The one Unterklade has smooth spores, while the second Lamprospora related Unterklade has ornamented spores.

Species

The exact number of species is unknown, since the Gattungsumgrenzung is currently in flux. Index Fungorum lists 130 valid names, but many species are a nomen dubium. Yao and Spooner (1996 ) give 12 types for UK (also includes Neottiella species). The database of fungi Austria lists the following ways:
