Oda of Haldensleben

Oda of Haldensleben ( * before 962; † 1023) was the second Christian wife of the Polish duke Mieszko I and by marriage from 978-992 Duchess of Poland.

Life

Oda was the daughter of Dietrich, Margrave of Nordmark. According to the sources, she was a nun at the Benedictine monastery to calving until it was with the consent of the father of Mieszko " kidnapped " and 978 taken to wife.

Oda, her sons and her husband, appear in a document 80 to 90 years later, known as Dagome Iudex.

This reference from the 11th century is regarded by historians as the first document of the State of Poland under the Piast dynasty.

After the seizure of her step- son Bolesław I the Brave, 992, they were referred to their children in the country and sought protection and inclusion in their native Saxony.
