Odawara, Kanagawa

Odawara (Japanese小田原 市, -shi ) is a city in Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan.

History

Odawaras strategic location on the old trunk road Tōkaidō between the mountainous Hakone and Sagami Bay has played a key role in Japanese history. Before the Edo period, the castle Odawara was the main castle of the Later Hōjō (also Odawara Hōjō ). During the Edo period, the castle controlled the Tōkaidō between the headquarters of the Tokugawa shogunate in Edo, and the stations west of Hakone, as Sumpu ( Shizuoka ), Hamamatsu and Nagoya.

On December 31, 1703, the city was badly damaged by an earthquake.

Today, a replica of the castle stands high on a hill above the city.

Odawara became a town after mergers on 20 December 1940.

Odawara was the last city in Japan, which was bombed in World War II (August 15, 1945).

Enoura, a coastal district in Odawara, is known for its pristine sea and the wealth of Kumamomi, a fish species that prefers clear and clean water. Sea turtles are also to be found. Because of the clear waters and rich marine life, it is popular with divers.
